Australia was once attached to Gondwanaland, the giant southern continent that embraced Antarctica, parts of South America, India and parts of Africa. As a result, many Australian plants have close and distant cousins in those modern countries. However, many of our stunningly beautiful plants have no relations anywhere else.

We have ancient Antarctic Beech and Huon Pine trees that were alive just after the Pleistocene, over 8,000 years ago. We have trees such as the Wollemi Pine which predate the ice age and have not changed much for 100,000+ years. We have the tallest flowering tree in the world, the Mountain Ash or Eucalyptus regnans.

The stunning and unusual plant at left is Richea dracophylla, a member of the largest heath genus in the world and found ONLY in Tasmania. Look at an example of a print of this flower now.

Australia is home to the Angiopteris ferns that are relics of plant life millions of years ago. We have the giant Satinays that were used as piles for the Panama Canal. We have the largest number of ground orchids in the world - such as the eerie but beautiful Greenhoods, including the magnificent Nodding Greenhood.

Australia also has a healthy complement of insect devouring plants - pitchers and sundews.
